Sam Houston National Forest is approximately 50 miles north of Houston on Lake Conroe. Offering hiking, camping, fishing, boating, hunting and other recreational activities, the 163,037-acre forest includes Double Lake and Cagle and Stubblefield recreation areas, Big Creek Scenic Area, Kelly's Pond and Little Lake Creek Wilderness Area.
The 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail transects the forest, running from Richards in the west to near Cleveland in the east. A separate 85-mile system of multiuse trails is open for ATVs, mountain biking and horseback riding; the Cagle Recreation Area has a 2.2-mile loop around Lake Conroe.
