DescriptionOne of the islands that make up the San Juan Islands, this also is the westernmost major island in the archipelago. Rolling hills dotted with small farms and patches of forest in the east transition to rugged terrain in the west, where Mount Dallas rises to 1,086 feet. Friday Harbor, San Juan Island's largest town, is a bustling port of call for ferries and other boats.
Perched at the island's northwest corner is Roche Harbor, a resort town and popular yachting destination. In a peaceful glen nearby is the Afterglow Vista Mausoleum. It commemorates John S. McMillan, founder of the local limeworks.
San Juan Transit provides regular shuttle service around the island. Narrated tours are available on a limited basis by reservation; phone (360) 378-8887.
