Originally settled as a commercial fishing village in the 1800s, San Pedro is a popular whale-watching area December through April. With Wilmington and Terminal Island, San Pedro forms the Port of Los Angeles, one of the largest deep-water ports in the nation. Fort MacArthur, now an inactive base but once a formidable coastal defense, overlooks the harbor; Cabrillo Beach lies south and offers fishing and jet skiing opportunities, and some excellent tide pools. Cruises to Catalina Island leave the Catalina terminal near the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Harbor cruises are available as well.
The Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur, 3601 S. Gaffey St., is a rehabilitation facility where ill or injured seals and sea lions are nursed back to health for return to their natural environment. Visitors can view the animals from a fenced area surrounding the center. Phone (310) 548-5677.
The American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial, a bronze statue at S. Harbor Boulevard and W. Sixth Street, honors merchant marine veterans from all wars.
