Description
This bustling Marin County residential city traces its beginnings to the early 19th-century founding of Mission San Rafael. The Downtown San Rafael Farmers Market sets up along Fourth Street (between B and Cijos streets) Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., April through September. In addition to seasonal produce from area farmers, the market offers healthy, yummy prepared foods from vendors and local businesses. Street musicians, art and craft booths and activities for kids add to the family-friendly atmosphere.
The Marin Shakespeare Company presents plays by the Bard at Forest Meadows Amphitheatre, on the campus of the Dominican University of California; take the US 101 Central San Rafael exit and follow signs to the university. Visitor parking is available in the lot on Belle Avenue (across from the Marin Tennis Club). The season runs from late June through September, with performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, plus a Sunday matinee; phone (415) 499-4488 for the box office.
