In the 1860s, Swedish and Norwegian immigrants left their drought-stricken homelands to start new lives in America. The town of Scandia was founded in 1868 and evolved from a settlement promoted by the Scandinavian Agricultural Society in Chicago. Scandia's founding pilgrims are recognized in a stone monument just east of the Republic River Bridge on US 36.
