Schulenburg was founded in the mid-19th century by German, Austrian and Czech settlers. The town was named for Louis Schulenburg, who donated land for construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1873. The Schulenburg Oil Mill, said to be the longest continuously operating cottonseed mill, ran from 1883 until the 1950s.
