Parcels for the town of Sharon were sold at auction in 1738; purchasers were required to clear 6 acres, build a house and live there for 3 years. An early success, the settlement was struck in 1732 by a mysterious “nervous fever” that killed at least 100 people and left others bedridden for months. The hardiest colonists survived, and discovery of iron ore in the northwest corner of the state ensured Sharon's economic future.
