Charles de Sainte-Etienne La Giraudiere, a French fur trader, built a post on the St. Mary's River at what became the village of Sherbrooke in 1655. Access to the area was by water, and a flourishing trade took advantage of the local natural resources. In 1861 gold was discovered, and the town boomed for 20 years. The village is a center for hunters and anglers.
