DescriptionWithin the Navajo Nation Reservation, 15 miles southwest via US 491 and Red Rock Road, is the geological formation Shiprock. The basalt core of an old volcano, the rock rises more than 1,700 feet above the desert floor. At sunset it appears to shimmer and float.
Because the Navajo consider Shiprock to be a sacred place, the tribe does not permit climbers to scale it. Scenic Indian Route 33 runs between Shiprock and Red Rock on the Arizona border.
