DescriptionThe Somerville area was first settled by Native Americans who eventually negotiated with European settlers for a peaceful withdrawal. Soldiers in the Continental Army were frequent visitors to the region then known as Raritan while Gen. George Washington was a guest at the Wallace House. Somerville began to take shape with the construction of a courthouse in 1787.
A great way to learn about local history is to participate in Somerset County's Weekend Journey Through the Past, held the second weekend in October. More than 20 historic sites, many with significant Revolutionary War histories, feature special exhibits, programs and tours.
