During Minnesota's gold rush in 1865, a prospector named George Stuntz discovered not gold but iron ore. A crew of miners began digging at Soudan in 1882. The first shipment was delivered 2 years later from what would be one of the richest iron ore deposits in the world. Mine operations ceased in 1962.
