South Union was the site of Kentucky's last Shaker community, a strict religious congregation that began in 1807 and disbanded in 1922. The communal society's land holdings covered 6,000 acres, on which members raised grain, planted extensive orchards and introduced crop rotation to southern Kentucky. Their interest in time-saving devices combined with their legendary craftsmanship resulted in such ingenious inventions as the clothespin, the metal-tipped pen, the circular saw and the tilting chair.
