St. Bernard is named after Bernardo de Galvez, the leader of the area's original colonists from the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. Plantation ruins can be seen along the San Bernardo Scenic Byway on SR 46. The town's proximity to the Mississippi River and the Intracoastal Waterway provides access to such recreational opportunities as bass and saltwater fishing and boating.
