Description
The converging valleys of the Moose, Passumpsic and Sleeper's rivers create a striking range of elevations upon which St. Johnsbury grew. The town was named after the French consul in New York, Saint Jean de Crèvecoeur, a friend of Ethan Allen and author of “Letters of an American Farmer.” Crèvecoeur suggested the addition of “bury” to the town's name to distinguish it from the many towns named St. John.
Much of St. Johnsbury's history and growth centered on Thaddeus Fairbanks' invention of the platform scale in 1830 and George Cary's idea of flavoring plug tobacco with maple sugar. The town prospered with the success of the Fairbanks Scale and maple-sugar industries, still major contributors to the local economy. It is the industrial, retail and cultural center of the part of Vermont known as the Northeast Kingdom.
