DescriptionIn March 1634 the Ark and the Dove sailed up the Potomac River and into the mouth of the St. Mary's River, carrying the first colonists to arrive in Maryland under the royal charter of Lord Baltimore. A representative government was initiated, and St. Mary's City became the first capital of Maryland. The town prospered on the impetus of government, but farming assumed priority when the capital was moved to Annapolis.
