DescriptionStory took its name from Charles P. Story, an early mayor of nearby Sheridan who was related to Nelson Story, one of the first to drive Texas cattle over the Bozeman Trail into Montana in 1866. His northbound trip was the only significant use of the trail. Because the costs of maintaining the forts along the trail were immense in terms of both money and lives lost, the U.S. government eventually abandoned them and closed the Bozeman Trail.
Nestled at the base of the Bighorn Mountains in thick stands of Ponderosa pine and aspen, Story offers abundant recreational activities. Camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and horseback riding are readily available.
