DescriptionThe land for Stratford Hall was purchased in 1717 by Thomas Lee, president of the Council of Virginia and acting governor 1749-50. The manor he built overlooking the Potomac River would be home to four generations of the Lee family, including Gen. Robert E. Lee, who was born there in 1807. Thomas' sons, Richard Henry and Francis Lightfoot, were the only brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence. Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee, Robert E. Lee's father, was a Revolutionary War general.
