DescriptionHistorically, Tappan is best noted for being the setting for the prologue and denouement of the Benedict Arnold-Maj. John Andre conspiracy. At his DeWint House headquarters, Gen. George Washington gave the command of West Point to Arnold, who arranged to betray the garrison to the British.
However, Arnold's contact, Andre, was captured, and the plans were uncovered. Andre was jailed in the old Seventy-Six House and executed by hanging on what is known as Andre Hill. His body was later traded for that of Gen. Richard Montgomery, who was killed in the Siege of Quebec in 1775. Andre was interred in Westminster Abbey in 1821.
