Founded in 1760 as a county government center, Tarboro also became an important tobacco and cotton market. The scenic Tarboro Town Common, bounded by Albemarle and Park avenues and Wilson and Panola streets, dates back to the town's founding and features 15 acres of oak-shaded lawn with statues, a fountain and a nature walk.
