One of Canada's largest cities in area, Timmins also boasts one of the richest gold mines in the world and a reputation as a major gold producer. The Porcupine Gold Rush of 1909 transformed “The Porcupine Gold Fields,” as Timmins was formerly known, from a fur-trading center into a mining town virtually overnight.
Named after Noah Timmins, who developed most of the region's mining potential, the city is at the center of the Porcupine mining area, which produces yields of copper, nickel, lead, tin, cadmium, gold, silver and zinc. Residents also work in forest-based industries.
