Seven miles east of American Fork on SR 92, Timpanogos Cave National Monument covers 250 acres in the American Fork Canyon on the north slope of 11,750-foot Mount Timpanogos. Three large limestone caverns are connected by man-made tunnels. About 1,800 feet in length, the temperature within the caves is a constant 45 F, with nearly 100 percent humidity. Dripstone is still forming, and spectacular helictites, aragonite crystals, stalagmites and stalactites can be seen throughout the lighted caverns.
The visitor center, 10 miles east of I-15 exit 287, shows a 20-minute introductory film on request. The cave entrance, about 1,065 feet above the canyon floor, is accessed from the visitor center by a strenuous, 1.5-mile paved foot trail; wheelchairs and strollers are not permitted. The round trip takes about 3 hours, including the tour. A self-guiding trail booklet is available at the visitor center.
Visitors must purchase tickets for the cave tour at the visitor center before embarking on the trail. Tours are limited to 16 people; arrive as early as possible or phone ahead to make a reservation, since all spots are often filled by mid-morning. The wait can be as long as several hours on Saturdays and holidays. An Introduction to Caving tour also is conducted mid-May through Labor Day. Tickets can be purchased up to 30 days in advance; phone (877) 444-6777.
Picnicking is permitted. Food is available. The visitor center is open daily 7-6, mid-May through Labor Day. Cave tours depart from the visitor center every 15 minutes from 8 to 3:30. Cave tour fee $8; $6 (ages 6-15); $4 (ages 3-5 and ages 62+ with an America the Beautiful–National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass–Senior Pass). Introduction to Caving tour fee $16; under 14 are not permitted. The fee to drive the Canyon Road (SR 92, also known as the American Fork Canyon-Alpine Loop Scenic Backway) is $6 (good for 3 days) or $12 (good for 7 days).
