A popular resort on the shores of Narragansett Bay and the Sakonnet River, Tiverton was incorporated in 1694 as part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. A royal decree in 1746 deemed that Tiverton be included within Rhode Island's boundaries, a ruling disregarded by Massachusetts, which reclaimed part of the town in 1862.
Fort Barton, on Highland Road, was a Revolutionary redoubt, where British troops practiced their invasion of Aquidneck Island and Newport. More than 3 miles of nature trails mark the site of the fort overlooking the Sakonnet River.
