Tonantzintla (toh-nahn-TSEEN-tlah), a tiny village just outside Cholula, is worth a visit just for its amazing church, as impressive as the one in neighboring Acatepec. Both churches are an easy side trip via bus or taxi from Cholula or Puebla.
You can also take an organized tour that includes the church on its itinerary. Mexico City-based Turibus offers an all-day tour aboard a double-decker bus departing from several downtown points—including the National Auditorium in Chapultepec Park, the Angel of Independence Monument and the Zócalo—that visits the Cholula Archeological Zone, the Church of Santa María Tonantzintla and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Puebla. The cost is 950 pesos; 600 pesos (children). For additional information phone (55) 5141-1360, ext. 2000, or 01 (800) 280-8887 (toll-free long distance within Mexico) Mon.-Fri. 9-6.
