Named after financier Charlemagne Tower, Tower was originally a rough-and-tumble mining settlement, home to workers laboring in the Soudan Iron Mine in the late 19th century. Descendants of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe live on a reservation at Nett Lake; the tribe opened a casino in 1985.
Minnesota's coldest official temperature—an arctic 60 degrees below zero—was recorded near Tower in February 1996.
