DescriptionGen. Nathan B. Forrest's 1862 capture of the Union forces in Trenton had little to do with military strategy. Acting as self-appointed scouts, Trenton residents greeted Forrest by waving their hats and handkerchiefs in the direction of the Union troops' hideout. Such subtle hints led the Confederate general to the depot, where he was able to take the Federals by surprise.
