Settled by Quakers in the late 1600s, the town of Tuckerton has gone by many names, including Clamtown, Fishtown, Quakertown, Andrew's Mill and Middle-of-the-Shore. In 1791 the busy Colonial seaport was designated by George Washington as America's third port of entry. Although constantly shifting tides and ferocious storms have taken their toll—the Tucker's Island Lighthouse collapsed into the ocean in 1927—the town perseveres as a historic seaport village with a distinctively maritime air.
