DescriptionNamed for Uncas, 17th-century chief of the Mohegan tribe, Uncasville is home to the 400-acre Mohegan Indian Reservation. Connecticut colonists formally recognized the sovereignty of the Mohegans in 1638, a treaty that remains in effect to the present day. The Mohegan Sun Casino has become one of the largest casino complexes in the world.
The remains of an old Mohegan fort and burial ground can be seen at Fort Shantok State Park, which covers 167 acres on the west bank of the Thames River, 4 miles south off SR 32.
