DescriptionVantage grew up around a ferry service that transported travelers across the Columbia River until a highway bridge was built in the 1930s. The town was relocated to higher ground when the reservoir behind Wanapum Dam flooded the original site.
Several recreation areas, including Wanapum and Ginkgo Petrified Forest state parks, border Wanapum Lake, created by the dam in 1959. The sculpture “Grandfather Cuts Loose the Horses” stands on a mesa overlooking the Columbia. This monumental work is best viewed from the Wanapum Vista viewpoint on eastbound I-90, 3 miles east of Vantage.
