The area around Vevay was settled in the late 18th- and early 19th centuries by French and Swiss immigrants. Many historic houses of Greek Revival, Federal, Italianate and Gothic architecture remain. Vevay was the 1837 birthplace of Edward Eggleston, editor and author of such works as “The Hoosier Schoolmaster” and “The Hoosier Schoolboy.”
