DescriptionLocated in the Mesabi iron range country, Virginia is rimmed with open mine pits and reserves of ore. Founded after the discovery of iron in the late 1800s, it holds the dubious distinction of being destroyed by fire not once, but twice in its fledgling history; some 5,000 miners and sawmill workers were left homeless after each tragedy.
A much-larger-than-life town landmark is the giant loon that floats on Silver Lake during the summer; the fiberglass decoy is 20 feet long and 10 feet high.
