DescriptionRich in Native American lore and legend, beautiful Wallowa Lake is at the foothills of the steep, forested mountains at the upper end of Wallowa Valley. Near the north end of the lake is the grave of Chief Joseph, leader of the Nez Perce, whose son Joseph battled the U.S. Army after the elder Joseph's death.
The 5-mile-long lake is the center of a popular recreational region. Horseback pack trips in the High Wallowas can be arranged; information and other activities are available in the town of Joseph, located just 1 mile north of the lake. At the lake's southern tip is Wallowa Lake State Park.
