Wamego is the birthplace of Walter P. Chrysler, founder of the Chrysler Corp. Built in 1879, the Schonhoff Windmill, reputedly the only operating stone windmill in the state, can be seen in Wamego City Park. Tours of the windmill are available; phone (785) 456-2040 for the Wamego Historical Society. A silo featuring a mural depicting scenes of the Oregon Trail is just north of town on Oregon Trail Road.
