DescriptionAuthorized to dedicate the town in honor of founder W.P. Harmon, the speaker at the naming ceremony accidentally designated the town Waverly, presumably after a Waverly novel he had read that day. Harmon did not object, and the name remained. The town has been the permanent home to Wartburg College, 100 Wartburg Blvd., since 1935. The competitive four-year liberal arts college is associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Bremer County Historical Museum, in an 1863 stagecoach inn on W. Bremer Avenue, features items relating to pioneer days.
