DescriptionPresident Andrew Jackson was born in 1767 at the Old Waxhaw Settlement, a couple of miles southwest of town on the North Carolina/South Carolina border. After the War of 1812, a dispute arose as to whether he was born in North or South Carolina. Jackson maintained he was a native of South Carolina, and attempts to resolve the mystery by finding the remains of the McKemey cabin site, believed to be his birthplace, were unsuccessful. Present-day Waxhaw has a historic district filled with quaint old houses and commercial buildings.
