The village of West Haverstraw is in the area 17th-century Dutch landholders called Haverstraw, meaning oat straw. Merchant trade out of Haverstraw Bay shored the community in the early years, giving way to textile milling and a lucrative brickmaking industry that grew to include 42 plants by 1885. Helen Hayes Hospital, founded in 1900 and later named in honor of the First Lady of the American Theater for her 49 years of service on its visitors' board, is one of the village's major employers.
The Ramapo Mountains, to the west, and Lake Sebago, off Seven Lakes Parkway, offer year-round recreational opportunities.
