DescriptionThe “pedlar ships” that operated in the Westport harbor once brought an aura of romance to the local waters, similar to the effect steamboats had on the Mississippi. The town's scenic coves and hillocks attract artists, actors, writers and New York commuters.
Compo Beach, where local minutemen surprised the British in 1777, still displays the cannons used in that battle. A statue commemorates the event. Sherwood Island State Park has a beach and picnic areas.
