Settled by Capt. Philip Skene and about 30 other British families in 1759, Whitehall was originally named Skenesborough in the captain's honor. After the Revolutionary War, during which Skene supported the British, the town changed its name.

Self-guiding tours
Historic buildings dating from 1824 are in a downtown area bounded by Broadway, Williams, Saunders and Clinton streets. A brochure detailing self-guiding walking and driving tours of Whitehall's historic areas is available at the Skenesborough Museum.
