DescriptionIn the heart of Madison County, Winterset is near the six remaining of the original 19 covered bridges for which the county is famous. Iowa novelist Robert Waller romanticized these bridges in his 1992 best-selling novel, “The Bridges of Madison County.” Scenes in the film version of the book were shot in Winterset and Adel—the arched stone bridge in the park where Francesca and Robert picnic is in Winterset's City Park. A shallow river crossing in nearby Pammel Park was the setting where Francesca's grown children discuss her diaries. The Madison County Covered Bridge Festival takes place the second full weekend in October.
On a bluff in City Park, Clark Tower honors some of the first settlers in Madison County and provides a good view of the area. Also visible for miles is the Madison County Courthouse; its dome has four clocks and is 122 feet high.
