Bird-watching is the highlight around Wood River mid-February to mid-April when the Platte River Valley fills with reputedly the world's largest congregation of sandhill cranes. Thousands of birders flock to the area along the river between Kearney and Grand Island to watch the birds' annual migration.
The birds spend time here resting and feeding before completing their trek to their breeding grounds in Canada and Alaska. The wildlife spectacle continues through May as prairie chickens and bobolinks frequent the area.
