AAA Editor Notes
Metepec is about 8 km (5 mi.) s.e. of Toluca via Mex. 55. It is best known for the Trees of Life (Arboles de la Vida) meticulously created by local artisans. Against a backdrop of clay trunks and branches, these delightful trees depict stories populated by a diverse cast of religious and secular characters and inanimate objects. Many families in town are engaged in the craft.

Buses depart frequently for Metepec from Toluca's central bus station. The town is an easy day trip from Mexico City as well. By car, leave the capital via Paseo de la Reforma or Avenida Constituyentes, picking up either toll Mex. 15-D or free Mex. 15 west toward Toluca. Take the Mex. 15-D exit for Taxco/Ixtapan de La Sal and follow signs for Metepec. Pottery shops line the main street; ask for directions to the artisans' workshops (alfarerías), where bargaining for purchases is expected. Note: Many are closed from 2-4 for afternoon siesta.
