Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark is at 20 32nd St. N. Built in 1882 to produce pig iron, these blast furnaces were the backbone of the city's industrial economy until the 1970s. Now converted into a museum of history and industry, it is the only such preservation project in the nation. A 32-acre park surrounds the site. A self-guiding tour brochure interprets history and describes the furnaces' operations.
