Ave Maria Grotto is off I-65 exit 308, then 4 mi. e. on US 278 to 1600 St. Bernard Dr. S.E., on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey and its preparatory school. Over a 50-year period, Benedictine monk Brother Joseph Zoettl used pictures as his guide to create a beautifully landscaped 4-acre park with 125 miniatures of famous churches, buildings and shrines from many parts of the world. Construction materials range from bits of discarded glass and jewelry to native stone and marble.
Brother Joseph was 80 years old when he created his final miniature in 1958. The grotto is in an old quarry, its landscape accentuated by gently sloping paths.
