Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge occupies approximately 35,000 acres surrounding the middle third of Wheeler Reservoir, between the cities of Decatur and Huntsville; the visitor center is at 3121 Visitors Center Rd. The refuge, one of Alabama's largest and oldest, attracts a variety of migratory waterfowl. Thousands of sandhill cranes and dozens of endangered whooping cranes spend the winter here. Habitats include pine uplands, mud flats, tupelo swamps, bottomland hardwoods and agricultural fields. The visitor center offers displays about conservation and the Tennessee River. Nature trails are available.

Boating, fishing and hunting are permitted. Hunting permits are available at the visitor center.

Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
