Fort Morgan State Historic Site is 21 mi. w. to 110 SR 180W, at the entrance to Mobile Bay; the fort shared strategic importance with Fort Gaines during the Civil War. After a 14-day siege in 1864, this Confederate stronghold surrendered following the Battle of Mobile Bay. The fort was reactivated during the Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II. A museum and artillery pieces also are featured. Ferry service links Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island. Brochures for walking tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.

Hours: Fort daily 8-5. Museum daily 9-4:30. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
