Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is at 12632 Confederate Pkwy. These 1,500 acres of wooded hills preserve ironworks that operated 1829-65. A major Confederate munitions supplier during the Civil War, the ironworks was destroyed by Union forces in 1865. The Alabama Iron and Steel Museum displays artifacts of the industry. Walking trails trace historic roadways. Olde Tyme Educational Crafts demonstrations are held weekends March through November. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
Park $4; $3 (ages 62+); $2 (ages 6-11). Museum $2; $1 (ages 6-11 and 62+). Train $2.
Hours: Park daily 7 a.m.-dusk. Visitor Center Mon.-Sat. 8:30-4:30, Sun. 12:30-4:30. Museum Tues.-Fri. 8:30-4:30, Sat. 9-4:30, Sun. 12:30-4:30. A gristmill operates the third weekend of the month.
