AAA Editor Notes
Macaulay Salmon Hatchery is at 2697 Channel Dr. During 15- to 20-minute presentations, tour guides explain hatchery processes, beginning with the imprinting of young salmon to ensure a return at the end of their lifespan and concluding with egg retrieval. In May-June, visitors may observe the juvenile salmon pre-release; from mid-June through October, the returning salmon may be seen in their outdoor holding tanks where they are separated and prepared for egg harvesting. Indoor aquariums contain more than 100 species of southeast Alaska sea life, including anemones, crabs and octopi. Visitors may feel such animals as starfish in touch tanks.
Guided tours are available.
