Independence Mine State Historical Park, 19 mi. n. on Hatcher Pass Rd., is a 761-acre park in the 221,000-acre Hatcher Pass region. The park preserves 15 buildings and numerous artifacts from its heyday as a gold boom town in the 1930s and 1940s. The history of the mine is chronicled in a museum and at the visitor center. Walking trails lead visitors past many of the mine camp's buildings, including bunkhouses, warehouses, the commissary and mess halls. Guided tours are available.
$5 (per private vehicle). Guided tour $6; $5 (ages 6-12).
Hours: Park open daily 24 hours. Visitor center open daily 11-7, mid-June through Labor Day. Tours are given Mon.-Fri. at 1, Sat.-Sun. at 1 and 3, mid-June through Labor Day. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
