Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, with its headquarters in Soldotna, 1 mi. s.e. of the Kenai River Bridge to 1 Ski Kill Rd., covers about 1,920,000 acres. The refuge was established in 1941 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to preserve the area's large moose population. Other wildlife include Dall sheep, coyotes, black bears and bald eagles. Fishing and hunting are subject to state and federal regulations. Boat ramps, camping and hiking trails from one-quarter mile to more than 2 miles are available.
