AAA Editor Notes
Moraine Lake is about 14 km (8.7 mi.) s. of the Lake Louise townsite and about 71 km (44 mi.) n.w. of the town of Banff. Though roughly half the size of better-known nearby Lake Louise, many believe blue-green Moraine Lake is equally as beautiful. Known as “the jewel of the Rockies,” the lake is in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, which provides the ten saw-toothed ridges that rise dramatically from the lakeshore. A number of hikes begin at the lake. A short trek to the top of a rockslide leads to panoramic views of the lake and valley. Canoe rentals are available in summer, and cross-country skiing can be enjoyed in winter.

Note: Due to the risk of avalanches, the road to Moraine Lake is closed from early fall to late spring. The precise dates vary depending on weather conditions. Some trails may not be available in summer; phone ahead for current trail information.

Recreational activities are permitted.
