AAA Editor Notes

Medalta is at 713 Medalta Ave. S.E. Brick, tile and pottery manufacturing were prominent industries in Medicine Hat starting in the late 19th century due to a supply of clay deposits, natural gas and the availability of railroad transportation. The city once boasted several potteries, such as Medalta Potteries and Medicine Hat Potteries (later Hycroft China Ltd.). Today only the brick industry remains. At the Medalta Potteries National Historic Site, visitors can watch pottery demonstrations and view beehive kilns constructed in the early 1920s, a large collection of Medicine Hat pottery and contemporary ceramic art. Artifacts and production machines also are displayed. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$12; $10 (ages 6-17, ages 60+ and students with ID); $30 (family, two adults and two children).
Hours: Daily 10-5 (also Thurs. 5-8:30). Guided tours are offered Thurs.-Sun. in summer; self-guiding tours are available rest of year. Closed Nov. 11.
